The Network of Women in Broadcasting (NOWIB) is outraged and deeply concerned about the reported assault on our member, Ohemaa Woyeje, a journalist with Angel FM. According to reports, Ohemaa Woyeje was allegedly attacked by security personnel and unidentified individuals at Angel FM premises, forcing her to use an alternative entrance to access the studio.
NOWIB strongly condemns this unacceptable act of violence against a media professional and calls for swift action from all relevant authorities:
We urgently call on the Ghana Police Service to conduct a thorough and expeditious investigation into this incident to ensure that all perpetrators face the full extent of the law. The culture of impunity surrounding attacks on journalists must end.
We appeal to the National Media Commission (NMC) and other regulatory bodies to implement more rigorous monitoring protocols at media houses nationwide to ensure the safety and well-being of all media personnel.
To media owners and management: We issue a stern reminder that harassment, intimidation, and abuse of journalists will not be tolerated. Media houses must create and maintain environments where professionals can perform their duties without fear of reprisal or harm.
While Ghana's rise to 50th position in the 2024 World Press Freedom Index is commendable, this incident underscores the continuing challenges faced by media professionals, particularly women, in our industry.
NOWIB stands in solidarity with Ohemaa Woyeje and will continue to monitor this situation closely. We urge all parties to remain calm while the appropriate authorities address this matter with the seriousness it deserves.
